For the Love of Writing

Writing is a long, arduous process. It's frustrating, time consuming, and takes a lot of practice to be good. Sometimes, obstacles arise that make us want to quit completely. Yet, so many people (myself included) continue to do it because we can't get enough.

Having a perfect first draft is ideal, but never the case. This must be a universal problem, because every single one of my English professors has mentioned a specific excerpt of Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird, which is honestly titled Shitty First Drafts. I find it motivating to keep on keepin' on.

After being assigned to read it for the fourth (!!!) time, it got me thinking about what other tools I've found useful throughout the writing process. So, with some recommendations from Emma and Sakshi, I created a list of resources that would be helpful to a writer. Check them out below!

Need inspiration? Here's a whole bunch of quotes:

Subreddits:

Reddit is a great place to read about, post, and discuss writing (or anything, really). I've only listed a few, but there's an endless amount of communities (aka subreddits) to discover.

Discussions about the writing craft.

All are welcome at r/writers: fiction writers, nonfiction writers, bloggers and more! Get critique on your work, share resources, ask questions and help fellow writers.

You're a writer and you just want to flex those muscles? You've come to the right place! If you see a prompt you like, simply write a short story based on it. Get comments from others, and leave commentary for other people's works. Let's help each other.

We are a subreddit dedicated to motivating writers to stay consistent and constantly grow their craft. Whether you're looking to get feedback on an idea, hear a critique, or get unstuck in a story, this is the right place.

It is our intent and purpose to foster and encourage in-depth discussion about all things related to books, authors, genres, or publishing in a safe, supportive environment.

Need a break from writing? Try reading!:

Access free eBooks and audiobooks through your school or local library

"Electric Literature is a nonprofit digital publisher with the mission to make literature more exciting, relevant, and inclusive. We are committed to publishing work that is intelligent and unpretentious, elevating new voices, and examining how literature and storytelling can help illuminate social justice issues and current events. We are particularly interested in writing that operates at the intersection of different cultures, genres, and media."

Everything from finding a writerly community, to spaces for sharing/promoting your writing, to getting your writing published
