Dear you,
The torch has been passed (unofficially); the pencils sharpened. Welcome to Gotham!
For those of you who are new, we’re a creative home in New York City that offers classes both in-person and online where writers can hone their craft.
It’s a new semester, which really means it’s more than just a new semester; It’s a new season, new classes, new events, and... New Interns. That’s us. “Us,” as in Emma, Mary Kate, and Sakshi. I’m the Sakshi part of that sentence, and I’d like to personally welcome you into this space we’re creating. The Gotham Interns Blog of winter 2020.
Hopefully there’s some momentum in my words, but we want to have compelling, and serious but fun conversations about many things here. First and foremost: Gotham. Not that our doors aren’t always open (because they are), but we’ll let you in on the sights and sounds airing the 14th floor of 555 8th Avenue, Midtown. That includes creative writing classes, contests, writerly-conversations, and Cosmo. Who’s Cosmo? We’ll introduce you two soon.
But apart from what happens within these walls, we’d like to take you outside, too. I mean, we’re in New York City. We’re in an astounding universe that’s connected to many others, that’s connected to even more. That being said, we’ll share some of the stories we hear out on the concrete that relate to our little universe here at Gotham, if and when we can of course. In the city that never sleeps, there is something keeping us all awake.
As a cornerstone of storytelling and creativity, we feel it's only right for us to share with you the things that we’re reading, and the stories and writing we love, too. Just from the discussions we’ve had at work, I can tell you that the three of us have distinct styles of writing we enjoy, so rest-assured, the dialogue will be plenty.
Because Gotham stretches (*it’s a comfortable stretch*) itself in every direction creatively, we recognize that there is more to storytelling than the bound-novel. There is music and movies and social media, too (just to open up a pocket of our expanding universe). We’re invested in all of it. The three of us will invite you into the songs and scripts we enjoy from time to time.
Oh, and how does a literary playlist sound? How does a ‘if Charles Dickens paid $9.99 for Spotify or Apple Music, this would be his curated playlist -his memoir in music and why’ type of thing sound? Personally, I think he’d be an Apple Music kind of guy, but I’m very open to discussion.
And that, folks, is just a brief glimpse of the kinds of topics we hope to open up here on the Gotham Interns Blog this winter.
We’re really, truly excited for the conversations that will unfold here, and we hope you will be, too.
Until next time. Keep reading. Keep writing.
Sincerely,
Sakshi
